The 2023 football season for Warhill was one for the books. This year was the first time the Warhill Varsity Football team went undefeated in their regular season. Undefeated all the way and even won the Bay River District game. They went off to the regionals and unfortunately lost to Phoebus, but they put up a good fight. Coach Rhodes credits their unprecedented success this season to: “Preparation, we had our goal set in February of 2023. We told the 23-24 seniors that it was possible for us to win every single game, if we could stay healthy, but winning all the games was always the plan.” The four varsity football captains, Taylen Eady, Jack Baker, Henry Hobert and Nick Marrero stated that their biggest accomplishment this season was going 10-0 in their regular season.
The Warhill Cheerleading team also came out of the season boasting great accomplishments. This year was the first time in four years the competition team made it to the state’s championships. This is one of the biggest accomplishments of Warhill Cheerleading history. They worked from last place in the beginning of the season to becoming the runners-up in the regional championship. Sam Thames, a first-year competition cheerleader, said, “We’ve had our battles, but in the end, we came together for the best.”
The Warhill field hockey team went 8-9 this season. They had a big win against Smithfield with a score of 8-0. They fought hard throughout the season and ended very strongly with a win against Manor. Three captains for the team, Ava Harris, Payton Auerbach, and Ellie Kidd noted what made the team stand out was: “our friendship on the team. We are close friends, that is why we work so well together. It is easy to communicate on the field.”
The Warhill Volleyball team went 5-18 this season. They had proud moments during this season according to senior, Maddie Boyd. One moment she highlighted was: “during the Jamestown game we took a set from Jamestown and kept them under ten points in one set.” Senior, Kylie Gram added, “We did very well with the team we had this season. We had a lot of fresh players, which was new for us. We did very well, and everyone improved a lot this season.”
The Warhill Cross Country had several proud moments. The team’s goal this year was to have both teams make it to the State competition. Three players from the boys’ team and the entire girls’ team made it. This is the first time this has happened in Warhill’s history. John Bascom said that they are required to do many strenuous workouts during practice. Hannah Howard stated, “This was one of the best teams that I have been on, and without the help of teammates, we wouldn’t have gotten this team to where it is now.”
The Warhill Golf team overall had a great season as well. The Warhill Golf team did progressively better over the last four years. Judah Mihalcoe said, “The new freshman on the team make this season stand out from other seasons because I can teach them and help them become better.” Mihalcoe explained further that there have been more positive attitudes on the team.
